Scripps College is proud to announce a transformative $1.6M gift from the estate of Dalton Krauss, former Professor of French at Scripps, honoring his remarkable four-decade legacy as an educator and champion of global learning. In recognition of his enduring impact, the Scripps College Board of Trustees has designated this gift as the Dalton Krauss Quasi-Endowment for Study Abroad and Global Education (SAGE). Krauss’s incredible gift supports Scripps Forward: The Centennial Campaign, which seeks to surpass $100 million raised over the next three years.
Professor Dalton Krauss and the Importance of Study Abroad
“Professor Krauss served multiple terms as the chair of the Committee on Study Abroad, putting his enthusiastic stamp of approval on policies that gave equitable access to study abroad opportunities, says Director of SAGE Neva Barker. “He understood that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it deepens when students engage directly with the world, especially when learning and using the local language. His legacy will live on in each student who steps outside their comfort zone to build meaningful connections across cultures.”
As an educator, Krauss believed deeply in the power of global education to shape thoughtful, engaged citizens. His gift will help remove financial barriers and open doors to immersive, life-changing global study for students who may not have thought it was a possibility.
“Dalton Krauss devoted 45 years to teaching at Scripps, shaping generations of students with the same passion that first took hold during his own high school study abroad experience,” says Professor of French and Francophone Studies Nathalie Rachlin. “Trained at Yale and specializing in 18th-century French literature, he also brought French cinema—especially the New Wave of the 1960s—into his classrooms with unmistakable joy.”
Rachlin notes how often Dalton shared the ways study abroad changed his life. He carried that conviction into everything he did—from his research in Paris to summers spent in Brittany and Cassis.
“Sharing his love of French culture became his life’s work,” adds Rachlin. “His gift to the College reflects that enduring belief: that students deserve to discover new passions and grow in ways they never anticipated.”
