Aishah Shahidah Simmons

What is the necessary work each one of us must do to co-create a society and by extension a world without violence? How does a “one size fits all” violence prevention model harm all victim-survivors? Award-winning Black feminist lesbian filmmaker of NO! The Rape Documentary and international lecturer Aishah Shahidah Simmons will share why she believes it’s imperative that we “color” gender and sexuality while we simultaneously “queer” race to transform rape culture.

Aishah Shahidah Simmons is a Black feminist lesbian, award-winning independent documentary filmmaker, television and radio producer, published writer, international lecturer, and activist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the Erma O’Brien Distinguished Guest Professor at Scripps College during the spring semester of the 2013-2014 year. She also teaches in the Silence…Broken and NO! The Rape Documentary. Ms. Simmons’ cultural work and activism have been documented extensively in a wide range of media outlets including The Root, Crisis, Forbes, Left of Black, In These Times, Ms., Alternet, ColorLines, The Philadelphia Weekly, NPR, Pacifica Radio Network, and BET. Ms. Simmons has screened her work, lectured extensively, taught classes, and facilitated workshops and dialogues at colleges and universities, rape crisis centers, juvenile correctional facilities, and government-sponsored events throughout North America and in numerous countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia.
