Chinese Paintings & Japanese Woodblock Prints

Close examination of art objects is an essential aspect of art history.

The Scripps College collections include over 300 Chinese paintings and prints and over 2000 Japanese woodblock prints, available for students to view and to consider for research projects.

The Chinese paintings in this exhibition, dating from the 15th-20th centuries, have been recently restored, and will be evaluated by students in the seminar “Arts of Late Imperial China” for a future Williamson Gallery exhibition with catalog in 2015. The Japanese prints and cloisonné on display will be discussed in the seminar “Arts of Meiji Japan.”
