Internships and Summer Programs

The European Union Center of California sponsors various internships and training opportunities for undergraduate students from the Claremont Colleges. Students learn about the EU and contemporary European issues while working/studying at an institution that deals with the EU and/or its member states.

Eurofound (Dublin, Ireland)

The European Union Center of California sponsors 1-2 summer internship(s) at The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound) in Dublin, Ireland each year. One of the first agencies to be established by the European Union, now 50 years in existence, its role is to provide information, advice and expertise on living and working conditions, industrial relations and managing change in Europe to key actors in the field of EU social policy. The intern will spend approximately 6 weeks performing primarily research assistance and some conference preparation.

In 2025, interns from the Claremont Colleges may be assigned to the following working groups and projects:

Working Life unit

  • Review of EU PolicyWatch entries
  • Language check and improvement for European  Working Condition Survey (EWCS) overview report
  • For the project on social partner involvement in Public Employment Services: finalization of literature review; checking national contributions; and identifying interesting cases for the case studies
  • Contribution to literature review for the working time reduction special project.

Employment unit

  • European Restructuring Monitor (ERM) – reviewing the incoming factsheets and overviewing latest developments in selected sectors or types (such as transnational cases), learning about the sectoral change and EU’s labor market related measures. An example:  https://www.eurofound.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2025-01/ef25036en_en.pdf
  • Learning about the new forms of work and the digital economy by contribution to the following projects: Platform economy repository – updates and learning about the initiatives and policies in context of the EU’s Platform work directive; Eurofound study of the ICT sector: feeder for the EU’s high-tech break-through? – reviewing and organizing sources and evidence for the project.

Social Policies unit

  • Economic and social regional disparities

Individual Funding

Online Application

The European Union Center encourages undergraduate students of the Claremont Colleges to apply for internships, enroll in study programs, and pursue research projects on topics related to European integration, politics, history and culture. Students may apply for a supplemental stipend of up to $2,000 per year to help with the cost of participation. Upon return, successful applicants will submit a short report on their internship/study program/research project and may be asked to participate in information sessions on campus.

Applications for individual funding are accepted throughout the year and decisions are made on a rolling basis until the available funds are exhausted. Applicants must be a Scripps College, Pomona College, or Pitzer College student in good standing. CMC students are not eligible for Individual Funding. Demonstrated interest in the European Union is desirable.

**Please note that in the academic year 2024-2025, priority will be given to students who have not been funded by the EU Center before. Students who received funding from the EU Center in previous years may still apply, but their applications will not be considered until May 1, 2025.**
