Euroskepticism and the Mainstream Right

The 2016 Brexit vote, in which a small majority of UK voters said they wanted to leave the European Union, was followed by calls for Frexit, Nexit, and Öxit, as European far-right leaders pledged that their countries would also leave the EU. We will discuss how a party that had never won seats in the UK Parliament forced the Conservatives to pledge an in / out referendum on EU membership, as well as what led far-right parties elsewhere in Europe to abandon their own “-xit” promises.

About the Speaker: Kim Twist is an Associate Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University. Challenges for democracies are the core of her research, which focuses on right-wing extremism in Western Europe.
