Dear members of the Scripps community,
This afternoon, black students and their allies sent a compelling and passionate message about the impact of violence against black communities nationwide and the climate for black students at the Claremont Colleges consortium by demonstrating on each of the 5C campuses in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. I stand in solidarity with these students on the need for change.
I was unable to witness the demonstration personally because I was attending Capstone Day presentations, but I have received the letter, which conveys students’ significant concerns about institutionalized racism and the ways in which it impacts them individually and collectively. The letter also makes clear that they are in pain and that their needs are not being acknowledged or adequately addressed by our community.
I care deeply about the safety and well-being of our students, as well as their academic success. I encourage any students impacted by recent events in Baltimore and elsewhere to contact Dean Charlotte Johnson, who is also deeply committed to progress on these issues.
While the end of the academic year is upon us, I am available tomorrow (Friday) at noon in my office to discuss concerns in person. I will also reach out with another opportunity next week.
I am committed to continuing our work with students, faculty, staff, alumnae, and my colleagues at the other Claremont Colleges to critically assess our campus climate, identify areas for improvement, and make the changes necessary to create the community that we aspire to be.
