Music Printing and Engraving

This workshop will begin with a close look at 15th-century manuscripts and printed books with music notation to identify the challenges of early scripts, red and black impressions, formats, and regional variations in performance practice. Cases of a music type, plus a box of pied type, will provide a hands-on experience with the challenges of composing type made up of designs that must be positioned on the lines and spaces of a music staff. Examples of music engraving, the foremost music printing technology of the 17th and 18th centuries will be illustrated. Workshop participants will use engraving tools and punches to cut music on zinc plates.
