“L.A. Palimpsest: Recovering Los Angeles’ Hidden Stories and Forgotten Communities”

The Scripps College Humanities Institute begins its spring 2007 program, “L.A. Palimpsest: Recovering Los Angeles’ Hidden Stories and Forgotten Communities,” with an opening lecture “Landscape of Soul: Hollywood, Watts, and Beyond,” on Tuesday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m. with poet and performance artist Wanda Coleman in the Garrison Theater, Scripps College Performing Arts Center.

The 63rd Scripps College Ceramic Annual, on view at Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College from Saturday, January 20 through Sunday, April 8, is the longest running exhibition of contemporary ceramics in the United States.

Mallarmé Symposium and Two Exhibitions Commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Scripps College Press

Scripps College will host a panel of noted book arts scholars and artists at the Frederic W. Goudy Symposium on Saturday, January 27. The day-long symposium will examine the lasting impact that the 19th-century French poet Mallarmé has had on book artists throughout the 20th century.

Kenan Professor John Milton Of Claremont Colleges Joint Science Department Receives National Science Foundation Grant

Dr. John G. Milton, M.D., Ph. D, Fellow, Royal College of Physicians of Canada, Fellow, American Physical Society and the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Computational Neuroscience at the Claremont Colleges, has received a $319,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support his research on the motor skills associated with stick balancing.

Scripps College Professor Nancy Macko’s survey show, “Hive Universe,” on view from December 15 through February 4, is the featured exhibition at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery located in the Barnsdall Art Park. The opening reception is on Sunday, December 17, from 2-5pm.

With her election this November to the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona’s 8th district, Gabrielle Giffords ’93 starts her Congressional career with a series of impressive firsts: the first woman to represent Arizona in Congress in more than a decade, the first Democrat to win the Tucson-area district in more than 20 years — and the first Scripps College alumna elected to national office.
