Scripps Students Win Top National Honors

Scripps students continue to earn top honors for their scholarship and proposed research. To date, Scripps women have been awarded two Fulbright scholarships, a Truman scholarship, a Goldwater scholarship and two honorable mentions, a Davis Peace Award, and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Scripps Students Receive Johnson Research Awards

Five Scripps students received Stanley and Mary Johnson Research Awards to conduct projects during the summer of 2008. Clio Korn ’10, Jenna Leahy ’10, Emily Luttrull ’10, Sarah Pripas ’09, and Duyen Tran ’10 will present their findings at a campus-wide event in the fall.

African Perspectives on Peace

Kofi Asare Opoku, formerly of the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana and retired professor of religious studies at Lafayette College, will speak about African perspectives on peace, April 14 in the Hampton Room, Malott Commons, Scripps College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Scripps Seniors Present Thesis Art Show

Eight senior studio art majors will present their thesis work from May 2 through May 18 at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery. The exhibit focuses primarily on two arenas in contemporary art: mixed media installations and hand-drawn graphic novels. There will be an opening reception on Friday, May 2, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

TV Special Correspondent Lisa Ling to Speak at Scripps

Lisa Ling, special correspondent for the National Geographic Channel and Oprah Winfrey Show, will lecture on “Opening Minds and Hearts to the Issues Surrounding Us” on Tuesday April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Garrison Theater, Scripps College Performing Arts Center.

Philosopher Peter Singer to Speak at Scripps

World-renowned philosopher, ethicist, and animal rights activist Peter Singer will give the Philip and Franciszka Merlan Lecture at Scripps College on Thursday, April 24, at 4:15 p.m. in Balch Auditorium. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture.

‘Scripps Dances’ Returns to Claremont

“Scripps Dances,” the annual spring concert of the Scripps College Dance Department, will take place on Thursday, April 17, and Friday, April 18, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m. in Garrison Theater, Scripps College. The program features original dance pieces choreographed by students, faculty, and guest artists.

Scripps Junior Named Truman Scholar

Maile Yeats ’09 has been named a Truman Scholar for the upcoming year and will receive a $30,000 scholarship to attend the graduate program of her choice. Yeats is the sole winner from The Claremont Colleges this year and one of only 65 Truman Scholars nationwide.

Scripps Students Named Barry M. Goldwater Scholar and Honorable Mentions

Laura Loesch ’09, a neuroscience and humanities major, has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar for 2008. Loesch was one of only 321 scholars chosen from among 1,035 nominees for the scholarship, widely considered the most prestigious award in the U.S. bestowed upon graduates studying in the sciences.

Scripps Junior Receives Davis Peace Award

Fatima Elkabti ’09 recently received the Davis Peace Award, given to students who seek to promote world peace through international projects. She will travel to the West Bank for several weeks in June to establish a series of writing workshops that she hopes will connect a group of American children with their Palestinian peers.
