Gabrielle Marie-Louise Jungels-Winkler Professor of Contemporary European Studies David Andrews, professor of politics and international relations, has been appointed the Gabrielle Marie-Louise Jungels-Winkler Professor of Contemporary European Studies at Scripps College, effective July 1, 2011. Professor Andrews succeeds Professor Patricia Dillon, who served with distinction as the inaugural appointee to this professorship.

In 1999, Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler ’72 established this endowed professorship in recognition of Scripps College’s long tradition of excellence in the study of European culture and civilization. The recipient of the chair could have an academic background and interests in economics, government and political science, history, or international relations. Appointment to this endowed professorship is for a period of 10 years.

In announcing the appointment, Scripps College President Lori Bettison-Varga said: “Professor Andrews is an excellent fit with the criteria for this professorship. He is internationally recognized for his scholarly work on monetary relations within Europe and between Europe and the rest of the world. Moreover, his contribution to founding, directing, and maintaining the European Union Center of California, located on the Scripps College campus, bridges the traditional areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. Working through the EU Center he has brought stellar dignitaries to campus and provided new and challenging opportunities for all our students.”

Professor Andrews expressed his delight at the appointment.  “It is a real honor to carry on the work begun by Professor Dillon,” referring to his predecessor in the professorship.  “Patricia did such a fabulous job in honoring Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler and in bringing honor to the College.  I am proud to have been asked to continue that tradition.”

Through this appointment, Scripps College recognizes Professor David Andrews’ distinguished work in the area of contemporary European studies.  His books include Governing the World’s Money (Cornell, 2002), The Future of Transatlantic Economic Relations: Continuity Amid Discord (Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, 2005), The Atlantic Alliance Under Stress: US-European Relations After Iraq (Cambridge, 2005), International Monetary Power (Cornell, 2006), and Orderly Change: International Monetary Relations Since Bretton Woods (Cornell, 2008).  His current book project is entitled Geopolitical Foundations of Monetary Union, 1945-1969, and examines the complex ambitions that led European governments to commit to establishing a single currency.
