Andrea Jarrell ’84 will release her memoir, “I’m the One Who Got Away,” in September but several summer “must read” lists are already harkening its arrival as a memoir that will “seriously make you think.” Jarrell has written about the difficulty that daughters have separating from—while still honoring—their mothers, about making a successful marriage without a map, about the perils of breaking the hereditary cycle of addiction, and, in her words, “how experience teaches us to live better lives than we imagined we could.” Jarrell’s work has appeared in The New York TimesThe Washington Post, and many other popular and literary publications. She earned her BA in literature at Scripps College and her MFA in creative writing and literature at Bennington College. A Los Angeles native, Jarrell currently lives in suburban Washington, D.C.
