Suchi Branfman, senior lecturer in dance, spoke to the Los Angeles Times about her latest dance initiative, Data or 7 Ways to Dance a Dance Through Prison Walls, a collaboration between dance artists and formerly incarcerated individuals. This initiative is part of Branfman’s larger Dancing Through Prison Walls project, which included Undanced Dances Through Prison Walls During a Pandemic in 2021 and Dancing Through Prison Walls in 2019. “How do we create work that invites people into understanding that we’re not separate from folks who are incarcerated, that we are implicated in their incarceration?” Branfman asks.
