Professor Emerita of Art History Samella Lewis received the 2021 College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement, ARTnews reported. Lewis was the first tenured African American faculty member at Scripps, where she directed and curated exhibitions for the Clark Humanities Museum. In 2007, the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery launched the Samella Lewis Contemporary Art Collection in her honor.
