The LAist featured the Museum of African American Art (MAAA), which was founded by Scripps College Professor Emerita of Art Samella Lewis. Lewis left her position at Scripps in 1984 to fundraise and acquire work full-time for the MAAA, which is now located on the third floor of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Macy’s. “Black art and artists must be recognized as having a style, a culture, a language and a talent that is all their own,” Lewis told the Los Angeles Sentinel in 1973.
