Kirk Delman, collections manager and registrar at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, spoke to the Claremont Courier about the Gallery’s fall exhibition, Gettin’ It Done. The exhibition, which opened on August 26, features visionary work by Black artists, including Scripps alum Alison Saar ’78, and honors the legacy of Scripps College Professor Emerita of Art History Samella Lewis. Lewis was Scripps’ first tenured Black professor and taught at the College from 1970 to 1984. She died in May 2022.
“If she felt it was needed to be done, she did it,” Delman said of Lewis. “And that was kind of arching back to Gettin’ It Done. . . . She was very appreciative of any effort, and she would have told you so.”
