Scripps College generates thousands of media stories a year about its faculty, students, and alumnae. These are just 10 of the breakthrough stories that garnered significant Internet, social media, or traditional media fame for Scripps in 2017.

  1. Scripps Presents events earn regional and national news coverage

A headliner Scripps Presents event featuring National Book Foundation executive director Lisa Lucas on February 16 was televised by C-Span’s BookTV. The Los Angeles Times’ Arts & Books preview featured news about the evening conversation with Art Garfunkel that was sponsored by Scripps Presents and Grand Performances on October 13 in downtown Los Angeles.

  1. Scripps College ranks one of the best in the nation

During rankings season, Scripps College’s Princeton Review and Forbes rankings were published in a variety of media outlets, including Huffington Post, Forbes, YahooNews, Chicago Tribune, San Diego Union Tribune, Town & Country magazine, and the Los Angeles Times. Scripps was named in Forbes’ Top 25 for both the Colleges in the West and Best Liberal Arts Colleges lists, and came out on top as #1 nationally for Best College Dorms by Princeton Review and #8 for Best Quality of Life, #12 among the Most Beautiful Campuses. Other notable Princeton Review rankings were: #14 Best Classroom Experience, #15 Best Career Services, #16 Best Campus Food, and #21 Best Schools for internships.

  1. New W.M. Keck Science Center dean highlighted in Chronicle

The Chronicle of Higher Education reported the appointment of Ulysses J. Sofia as dean of the W.M. Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges.

  1. Branwen Williams’s arctic algae research shows increasing acidification in world’s oceans

Associate Professor of Environmental Science Branwen Williams’s knowledge about how temperature changes and water chemistry affect sea coral was highlighted in a March 2017 article in Smithsonian.com magazine. Williams and her arctic research team are considered on the leading edge of coralline research and are currently focused on using boron isotopes to help determine pH, a critical component in water chemistry.

  1. Ken Gonzalez-Day’s Guggenheim Fellowship and PST LA/LA exhibitions make headlines

Art Forum and Art News published news of Professor of Art Ken Gonzalez-Day’s Guggenheim Fellowship for photography, among the 2017 awardees announced in early April. Gonzales-Day was featured October 4 in a Press Play interview by Madeleine Brand for KCRW-FM radio, discussing photographs of Los Angeles murals on view at the Skirball Cultural Center as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, and in Artillery; LA Observed; LA Weekly‘s featured video interview; KCRW-FM; and the Huffington Post.

  1. Los Angeles Times features pioneering alum, Williamson exhibition on women photographers

In a June 2017 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Scripps alumna Sue Finley talked about her long career at JPL as a “human computer” and engineer. In late July, the LA Times published an interview with Graciela Iturbide, a luminary of Latin American photography, is one of three Mexican female photographers whose work was showcased in the Williamson Gallery’s Revolution and Ritual exhibition for the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative. The article had a prominent mention of the Scripps gallery’s exhibition, plus dates and times to invite readers to visit campus.

  1. NPR and C-SPAN cover Scripps College commencement

NPR’s OnPoint published the video of Scripps’ commencement featuring the speech of Girls Who Code founder Reshma Saujani. C-SPAN covered the event live, on campus, in its entirety and published the complete address on its website.

  1. Buzzfeed lauds Scripps College’s beautiful campus

Scripps was highlighted on May 19, 2017 in Buzzfeed.com for being one of the most beautiful colleges in California. The popular online news blog creates a ripple effect for readers who engage in social media activity: there were more than 27,697 interactions with the story on Facebook, 260 tweets on Twitter, and 184 shares on LinkedIn.

  1. Mammals, politics, and happiness make headlines for faculty experts

November headlines highlighted the expertise of several professors: Assistant Professor of Biology Lars Schmitz, commenting on the evolutionary behavior of early mammals article in Science magazine; Assistant Professor of Psychology Lahnna Catalino, pointing out in her research on “prioritizing positivity” that structuring your day around activities that make you feel happy can boost your well-being in a Vice article; and Assistant Professor of Politics Vanessa Tyson, who was quoted in a Huffington Post article about why it is harder to hold lawmakers accountable for such sexual harassment than it is in Hollywood or other cultures.

 

  1. Put this on your coffee table: Architectural Digest features Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Hall

It was no surprise that in 2017 Scripps College landed on America’s Top 15 Most Beautiful Dormitory list in Architectural Digest, which featured color photographs of Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Hall.
