I-20 REQUEST & VISA PROCESS

We are glad that you have chosen Scripps College for your studies and look forward to welcoming you to our campus in August! The Office of Admission will send you links to an I-20 request form and the Scripps College International Student Financial Form after you have submitted your intent to attend. Please make sure to read all directions carefully and include all necessary supporting documents. Once all necessary forms and supporting documents have been received and reviewed, your I-20 will be issued and sent to you, along with a guide for applying for your F-1 visa. You may view the summer 2024 guide here. [linked]

If you require a J-1 visa/DS-2019 to attend Scripps College, please contact Becky.

SEVIS TRANSFER IN

If you are currently studying in the United States, or just recently ended your studies in the United States, you may be eligible to request the transfer of your active SEVIS record to Scripps. The following must be true:

  • Your SEVIS transfer will occur within 60 days of completing your high school studies (if applicable)
  • You will begin studies within 5 months of your final day of study at your previous institution.

Your current Designated School Official (DSO) / International Student Advisor would need to initiate a transfer of your SEVIS record to Scripps College in order for us to access it and issue you a “transfer pending” I-20 that you may use to travel during the summer. Please provide a copy of your letter of acceptance to Scripps College and this transfer request letter to your advisor so that they may review your record and transfer it in SEVIS, if applicable.

Transferring your record will allow you to maintain one single SEVIS record and avoid any confusion of multiple records whilst entering the U.S. You will not need to pay the SEVIS fee again. If your F-1 visa is still valid for re-entry, you may use it in conjunction with the transfer pending I-20 from Scripps to re-enter the U.S. before international pre-orientation.

HOUSING & ARRIVAL

95% of Scripps students live on campus at Scripps for the duration of their study. Living on campus is not only convenient but helps build community.

All first-year students are required to live-on campus in one of the 11 residence halls. Admitted students will receive a questionnaire from NSPO in the beginning of June; this form will help pair roommates together based upon common lifestyle matches (such as typical bedtime). You may view further information on housing on the NSPO Housing Frequently Asked Questions page.

International students will move-in to the residence halls early in order to attend the required International Student Pre-Orientation program. The Fall 2024 International Student Move-In Dates are August 14 and 15, 2024.

The closest airport to The Claremont Colleges is Ontario International Airport (ONT), however the international flights to this location is much more limited than that of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which most international students fly in to. The Scripps Shuttle will be making two rounds of arriving student pick-ups per day on August 14 and August 15, 2024. Please refer to the arrival information sent to you via email for further details.

INTERNATIONAL PRE-ORIENTATION

The 2024 International Pre-Orientation will be held from August 16-19, 2024. This program is mandatory for all F-1 and J-1 international students.

The pre-orientation will not only include information that is important for starting your studies at Scripps, but it will also include opportunities to get necessities set up, connect with current and new students, and learn about the campus and community. The International Pre-Orientation will include topics and activities such as the following:

  • Trip to a shopping center with Target, various banks and mobile phone carriers
  • 7C International Student Resource Fair and Mixer
  • Health Insurance & Health Care in the United States
  • Maintaining Status, Employment and Taxes as an International Student
  • Academic, Cultural and Social Adjustment
  • Finding and Making Connections at Scripps
  • Various social activities
  • Campus and Claremont Village tours

The full International Pre-Orientation schedule will be available in August.

NSPO

NSPO stands for New Student Programs and Orientation; Scripps holds a comprehensive orientation program for all new Scripps students. The program focuses on academics, community expectations and connections and spans several days leading up to the start of classes.
Make sure to carefully read all email notices from NSPO, as they include important updates and deadlines. Current deadlines may be viewed on their Important Dates and Reminders page.
