Lights, Camera, Action with Matthew Cherry
Academy Award-Winning Filmmaker, Producer, and Author
Matthew Cherry’s 2020 Oscar winning short film, Hair Love, was adapted into a picture book for Penguin Random House and immediately became a New York Times Bestseller and earned nominations for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Children and the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Picture Book.
Cherry is the showrunner and director of Young Love, a 12-episode animated series that HBO Max ordered based on the characters in Hair Love. He is set to direct the feature film Redd Zone for Netflix and Westbrook Studios, along with Jada Pinkett Smith as the lead.
Cherry is also developing the animated adventure feature Tut for Sony Animation and is currently rewriting Aristocats for Disney. His first feature film, The Last Fall, was inspired by his own experiences playing in the NFL and starred Lance Gross and Nicole Beharie. It debuted at SXSW and made its television premiere on BET. He directed the pilot and second episode of Kings of Napa with Executive Producers Oprah Winfrey and Janine Sherman Barrois for OWN. He’s also directed multiple episodes of cable/streaming and broadcast television including Abbott Elementary, Black-ish and Bel-Air.
