Scripps College Receives $700,000 Grant to Support Undergraduate Research From The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Scripps College President Lori Bettison-Varga today announced the College received a $700,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support undergraduate research in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The grant will span a three-year period.

“Scripps College’s focus on undergraduate research provides rich opportunities for intellectual inquiry,” Bettison-Varga said. “With The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s generous grant we will enhance the independent research experiences available to our scholars so they can address complex issues and strengthen their preparation for career pursuits and graduate school.”

Through the grant, the College will create two new programs, Research Fellows and Pre-Thesis Fellows. The new fellowships will offer 46 undergraduate students annually – 138 over the course of three years – ample possibilities to become independent researchers and to develop insights into a field of study exceeding what a conventional class can provide. Faculty experts will mentor students as they learn research methodologies and refine their analytical skills.
