Fall 2018 Convocation: Students, Faculty, and Staff Celebrate the New Academic Year

On Tuesday, September 4, Scripps College welcomed students, faculty, and staff to campus for the start of the 2018–19 academic year. President Lara Tiedens delivered the opening remarks and acknowledged the 2017–18 recipients of the Mary W. Johnson Faculty Achievement Awards in teaching, research, and service and the 2018 Outstanding Staff awardees. She was followed by Amy Marcus-Newhall, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, who congratulated continuing students for the awards and honors they received during the past year and introduced new faculty.

Nancy Macko, Mary W. Johnson Professor in Teaching, professor of art, and chair of the Department of Art, and Stacey Wood, the Molly Mason Jones Chair in Psychology and professor of psychology, delivered keynote addresses. Their talks were entitled “#iloveschool #myliberalartseducation #disequilibrium” and “Call to Claim Your Prize: Lessons Learned,” respectively.

Convocation concluded with students, faculty, and staff joining together in song with Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choirs Charles Kamm, who led the audience in Thy Many Gifts, the Scripps alma mater composed in 1932.
