Grants

Grants are financial aid funds that do not need to be repaid.

How much grant funding you will be awarded depends on your and your family’s demonstrated financial need, as determined by the College after reviewing your FAFSA, your CSS Profile and other financial information.

There are four main types of grants that are available:

Scripps College Grant

Scripps College offers its own grant funds to supplement awards given by the federal and state governments.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for Scripps College Grants if:

  • you are a full-time student pursuing your first bachelor’s degree;
  • you meet all annual application deadlines (see Apply for Aid); and
  • you demonstrate financial need.

Scripps College Grants are limited to eight semesters of attendance for students who enter the college as first-time, full-time students. Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward their degree objective as outlined in the Scripps College Academic Catalog. All Scripps Grant recipients must complete a Scripps Grant Recipient Form each year before their funds will disburse.

Students participating in overseas and off-campus studies through the Study Abroad and Global Education (SAGE) program are eligible to receive Scripps College Grants.

Note that while your initial financial aid package may include Scripps College Grants, these funds may be replaced by one of the Scripps College Named Scholarships as the academic year progresses.

Renewal

To renew your Scripps College Grant you must reapply for financial aid each year. Your award amount may change due to changes in your financial need (as determined annually by Scripps), changes in your enrollment plans, and the timeliness of your financial aid applications.

Cal Grants

Cal Grants are funds offered by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) to California residents only and are limited to eight semesters of eligibility. A Cal Grant may only be used to pay tuition and mandatory fees. Cal Grant B provides a first year stipend for living expenses only. In subsequent years, the grant helps pay for tuition and fees in addition to the stipend.

Eligibility

You must be a full-time student at Scripps College and meet all of the CSAC’s general eligibility requirements to receive the full Cal Grant A or B amount.

Selection of Cal Grant recipients is based on a composite score that takes into consideration:

  • your family’s income;
  • your parents’ educational level;
  • your high school and/Scripps GPAs (Cal Grant A requires a minimum 3.0 GPA; Cal Grant B requires a minimum 2.0 GPA); and
  • other factors (such as coming from a single-parent household).

You may still be eligible for a Cal Grants even if you are not a full-time student, though the amount of the grant will be prorated for half- or three-quarter-time enrollment.

Your eligibility for a Cal Grant will be reassessed each year, based on your family’s income and assets. To remain eligible, you must:

Federal Pell Grants

Administered by the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Pell Grants provide financial assistance to undergraduates with exceptional financial need. Pell Grants are limited to 12 semesters of eligibility.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant if:

  • you are a US Citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • you demonstrate financial need;
  • are pursuing your first bachelor’s degree;
  • maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress toward your degree; and
  • you meet all annual application deadlines.

Your award amount will be based on your financial need and the cost of attendance at Scripps, as well as other factors.

You may still be eligible for a Pell Grant even if you are not a full-time student, though the amount of the grant will be prorated for half-, three-quarter, or less-than-half-time enrollment.

Renewal

Your eligibility for a Pell Grant will be reassessed each year through a reapplication process. To remain eligible, you complete and submit the FAFSA and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward your degree objective.

Federal SEOG Grants

Federal SEOG Grants are awarded by Scripps College to students with the highest demonstrated financial need. FSEOG Grants are made up of federal and Scripps College funds.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for the FSEOG  if you are:

  • a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen;
  • pursuing your first bachelor’s degree and meet all annual application deadlines;
  • be maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward your degree objective;
  • have been determined eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant; and,
  • have the highest demonstrated financial need.

Renewal

To renew your FSEOG you must reapply for financial aid each year by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the CSS/Financial Aid Profile, and other required forms by the established deadlines. Your award amount may change based on your Scripps College determined financial need, your enrollment plans, and the timeliness of your financial aid application.
