Economic Programs

Money Wise Women

Money Wise Women

The purpose of this program is to enable every Scripps student to learn to manage her own financial assets, by providing her with the skills and the confidence to achieve financial independence. The program includes professional (often alumnae) presentations, panels and workshops on financial issues; study-break financial workshops in residence halls; faculty and student presentations to parent and alumnae gatherings; student/alumnae workshops; and Economics 40, a personal finance class that is without prerequisites and is open to any Scripps student. The program also includes opportunities for participation in and/or educational support for the Student Investment Fund (SIF, below), the Scripps College Economic Society, the Scripps College Academy, the Student Store, and the Motley, a student-run coffee shop. The program is managed by a planning committee that includes student, faculty, alumnae, administration and staff representation. For further information, contact associate professor Sean Flynn.

Scripps College Economic Society

The Scripps College Economic Society is a student-run organization dedicated to the examination and discussion of economic issues. SCES organizes events for Scripps women and other students from the five Claremont undergraduate Colleges, such as financial awareness workshops, pre-registration study breaks, and semi-annual dinners with presentations by interesting specialists in economics.

Student Investment Fund

The Scripps College Student Investment Fund provides a hands-on learning environment for those interested in the stock market and investment management. Its members have the unique opportunity to acquire valuable immediate experience without engaging personal financial resources. SIF welcomes the broadest variety of members, and places more emphasis on strong interest, enthusiasm and commitment to the Fund than on previous investing or related-major experience. Any Scripps student with an interest in the Fund and a desire to learn is strongly encouraged to apply. We accept new member applications at the end of each semester.
