Limited Edition

– Out of Print –

During the first five years at the Scripps College Press, students were limited to the one typeface they had in the cases: 16 pt. Scripps College Old Style, designed for Scripps by Frederic W. Goudy in 1941. This constraint did not suppress their creativity but rather stimulated their imagination. Sixty years later, we are revisiting the subject of boundaries. This decision was in response to a reading of the book Boundaries written by architect and artist Maya Lin. She talks about hierarchical decisions that must be made when designing a building, which parallels the methodology of building a book. She notes the blurring of boundaries between art and architecture. For inspiration, we looked at the size limitations of books produced by 17th century Hungarian punchcutter and printer Nicholas Kis. of our first decisions was to adopt his second smallest size, which is 2.875 wide x 5 tall. We let words flow across the gutter, dictating gluing the pages together rather than sewing along the fold. We expanded our own boundaries, which is how this book evolved into stories about social, physical, political, and sexual boundaries. Eleven students came together to explore and push our own limitations. This Limited Edition is printed in 12 pt. Caslon on Somerset Satin. Using a tertiary color system, the method of pochoir was utilized to create our individual imagery. To create our unique binding, the spine was glued, then reinforced with Japanese paper. The folios were glued to each other and covers were attached. Next, the covers and spine were wrapped with Japanese paper and glued. Limited Edition is housed in a paper slipcase. A small book of big concepts; there are 81 books in this edition.
