Spotlight on Students: Rachel Kahn ’17 Takes on Oceans of Opportunity

As a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellow, this summer Rachel Kahn ’17 is drawing from her varied scientific interests and knowledge as she undertakes a unique research opportunity.The topic of her research? Kahn is currently modeling the body temperature of a common species of barnacle, Balanus glandula, found on the West Coast of North America. The model will be used to predict the temperatures of other ocean organisms as weather and climate conditions vary. This data will help scientists understand how climate change is affecting marine ecosystems.

Beyond Shakespeare: Conservation Internship Leads to Professional Mentorship

While most students leave Scripps during the summer months, a few remain, lured by the appeal of a paid summer internship. One of these students is Madeline Helland ’18, who is working as a Wilson Conservation Intern this summer. The Wilson Internship is one of many paid internships offered through the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College, and this summer marks the twenty-third consecutive year that paid summer internships have been available to students. “This has been an amazing internship, so if you’re remotely interested in working in the arts it is definitely worthwhile,” says Helland.

Scripps Athenas Earn Honors and Hall of Fame

Scripps Athenas earned several prestigious 2015 honors for breaking records and making great contributions to CMS athletics. Former NCAA Division III All-America in women’s swimming Brett Eppich Beal ’82 was inducted into CMS athletics hall of fame. Three Scripps Athenas earned All-Academic honors as individuals in track and field and cross country for the 2014-2015 season

Amy Ellingson ’86 recently unveiled a 10-by-109-foot mural for San Francisco International Airport. Untitled (Large Variation), located in Terminal 3, is the largest public art commission in the airport’s collection.

Scripps Alumna Builds Reality Out of Fantasy

In October 2012, Seattle hosted the 10th anniversary of BrickCon, a public, interactive exhibition that brings together adult LEGO fans and hobbyists. Among the attendees was Scripps alumna Alice Finch ’96, who unveiled what is perhaps the largest LEGO structure ever built by an individual—a replica of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

At Scripps, entering first-years have internship opportunities well before classes begin.

“Providing students with a meaningful internship opportunity before they even begin their first year gives them valuable experience and a leg up on stiff nationwide competition for future internships.
