Biography

Elana Mann (b. 1980, Boston, MA) is a multidisciplinary artist whose artwork mines the historical, socio-political and pedagogical aspects of sound in culture.

She has presented her work in city parks, museums, buses, empty lots and galleries in the U.S and abroad, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Ben Maltz Gallery, Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles; REDCAT, Los Angeles; The Ford Foundation, New York; The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; A Gentil Carioca, Rio de Janeiro; The Getty Villa, Los Angeles and the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, Shenyang, China.

Mann is a recipient of California Community Foundation’s Visual Arts Fellowship, ARC grants from the Center for Cultural Innovation and a YoYoYo! Grant from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation. In 2013 she was the Amy Marie Sears Memorial Visiting Artist at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. She has produced six publications, four of which are in the collection of the Getty Research Institute. Her projects have been covered by the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, NPR, O Globo, El Pais, La Reuppublica and X-Tra Magazine, among others.

In addition to her individual studio artwork, Mann curates, collaborates, organizes, and writes. She is the co-founder, with artist Robby Herbst, of the curatorial project Chats About Change. Since 2005 she has collaborated with artist Audrey Chan as the duo Chan & Mann. Her writing has been published in the book In the Canyon, Revise the Canon, as well as periodicals including Afterall Journal, Art21, and The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest.

Mann received her B.F.A. with honors from Washington University in St. Louis, and her M.F.A from California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer at Scripps College.
