Leadership Immersion Treks

Leveraging the Laspa Center’s strategic partnerships, students have access to exploratory and educational conferences and symposiums through Leadership Immersion Treks. Read more on this year’s leadership immersion treks to PLEN Women in STEM, PLEN Women Influencing Washington, the Carter Center Executive Briefing, and the Forté Foundation Leadership Conference for African American/Black and Latinx Women.

PLEN Women Influencing Washington

March 16-20 (Spring Break)

Learn about the legislative process, explore the legislative process and hot button issues on Capitol Hill, and build a professional network of women in this expenses-paid Leadership Immersion Trek to Washington, DC. Participating students will have an opportunity to learn from and network with women from all sectors of Congress who are leading policy; meet with alumnae; explore metropolitan D.C.; and develop hands-on skills in public speaking, networking, advocacy, salary negotiation, resume building, running for office, and more.

The Laspa Center will send 6-9 students to participate in the PLEN Women Influencing Washington conference. Sponsorship includes airfare, registration, lodging, and most meals. Review a sample itinerary.

Eligibility

All currently enrolled students who will have completed at least one full semester and are in good academic standing at the time of the trek are eligible. This conference will require personal accountability and responsibility. Students are limited to one trek experience per year (including treks hosted by Career Planning & Resources).

The application includes a series of short-answer questions and a current resume.

Supplemental Materials

Leadership Immersion Trek participants may be asked to share their experiences with the community and will be asked to submit:

  • A post-program survey
  • One-page trek summary with photo
  • One blog submission

Timeline

  • Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2020.  (Each applicant should receive an automatic confirmation upon submission.)
  • All applicants will be notified of the status of their application by Monday, February 10.
  • Students who receive sponsorship will need to register with PLEN by February 20.

Forté Foundation Business Leadership Conference for African American/Black and Latinx Women

April 3, 2020

When women of color have their voices heard, we all win. Diverse perspectives lead to brilliant solutions for everyone, from corporations to consumers, to communities. This event will help you shine during your job search and at work while embracing and leveraging your diversity.

The Forté Foundation is a non-profit consortium of leading companies and top business schools working together to launch women into fulfilling, significant careers through access to business education, opportunities, and a community of successful women. Explore a multitude of business careers, build leadership skills, and expand your network in this one-day interactive conference.

The Laspa Center will send up to 10 students to participate in the Business Leadership Conference for Black and Latinx Women.  Learn more here.

The application includes a 300-500 word statement of interest, and a current resume.

Carter Center Executive Briefing Sponsorship

April 23-26, 2020

Through the generosity of former trustee Barbara Bruner ’76, one student will attend the Carter Center’s Executive Briefing Conference, April 23-24 and activities in and around Atlanta, with an optional add-on trip to Plains, GA (Carter’s hometown) April 25-26. This award covers all conference-related expenses including airfare, hotel, registration, and meals.

Eligibility

All currently-enrolled Scripps College sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing are eligible to apply.

To Apply

  1. Send an email to to laspa@scrippscollege.edu. Include your last name and “Bruner Carter Center Application” (e.g. Smith_Bruner Carter Center Application).
  2. Attach a Resume that includes your name in the file name.
  3. Attach a Statement of Intent (approximately 500 words that address your interest in attending the conference, previous experience, if any, with health, human rights, and/or peace). Include your name, class year, email, phone number, major/minor, and Scripps mail box number.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, 2020.
