Storytelling for Singers: A Masterclass with Eli Villanueva

Eli Villanueva, a talented and passionate musician, director and educator, brings his magic to every project on which he works. His uniquely energetic and joyful approach draws out consistently remarkable performances from community members and students new to performing, as well as from seasoned professionals.

In his 17th year as Resident Stage Director and teaching artist for LA Opera Connects, Eli teaches and directs as many as 2,000 students annually in original productions including, The Acclaimed In-School Operas, Opera Camp Summer Intensive, and LA Opera’s Off Grand Cathedral Project conducted by Music Director, James Conlon.

During the Masterclass at Scripps College, Mr. Villanueva will focus on the foundations a singer needs to use for good story-telling: Breath, Focus, Reaction, Energy, and Body. His goal is to convey how these foundations can be used to affect compelling moments in musical story.

Student singers participating in the masterclass are:
Reilly Arena, Scripps ’23
Michelle Calcany Blair, Pitzer ’21
Martin Gonzalez, HMC ’21
Cece Malone, Pitzer ’24
Sulekha Ram-Junnarkar, Scripps ’24
Kate Sensenig, Scripps ’22

Contact Scripps Prof. Susannah Zaidel if you are interested in more information.

This class is not open to the public.

This masterclass is made possible by a grant from the J.C. Harper Lectureship Fund from the Scripps College Office of the Dean of Faculty.
