SUMMARY:Profit and Protest: The Business of Immigration Detention
DESCRIPTION:The United States has the largest immigration detention system globally\, growing from a capacity of under 5\,000 detainees per day in the 1980s to record highs of over 70\,000 people by 2026. Although the harshest anti-immigrant rhetoric is often linked to Republicans\, the expansion of the nation’s detention infrastructure and carceral policies has increased significantly under both political parties. Drawing on involvement with anti-detention organizations in the US\, UK\, and Australia\, Morris discusses the ways that immigration detention generates income\, even as instances of abysmal detention conditions and abuse increase. Morris considers the tensions surrounding anti-detention advocacy\, where a focus on detention reform and refugee rights complicates abolitionist action. \n  \nBio: Julia Morris is Associate Professor of International Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Visiting Politics Faculty at Scripps College. She holds a DPhil in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Oxford. Previously\, she was a Post-doctoral Fellow at The New School’s Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility and a Research Student at Oxford’s Centre on Migration\, Policy and Society. Her research focuses on the political economy of migration and border externalization\, from ethnographic fieldwork in Nauru\, Australia\, and Geneva to research projects in Jordan and Guatemala. She has published widely and is the author of Asylum and Extraction in the Republic of Nauru (2023) with Cornell University Press.

SUMMARY:Kapa (Hawaiian Bark Cloth): a Cultural Foundation of the Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:O’Brien Distinguished Visiting Artist Page Chang discusses the historical relevance of the Hawaiian Kapa Making practice\, what the reclamation of the practice means to the Hawaiian community\, and the lessons that we take from the practice\, moving into the future. \nPage Chang is a Native Hawaiian Kapa maker\, or Hawaiian Barkcloth maker\, whose work is deeply rooted in Native Hawaiian cultural practices. Hawaiian Kapa cloth—created with the fiber of the Wauke tree\, or Paper Mulberry\, pounded by hand into cloth\, and colored with natural dyes—has been the heart of Pageʻs artistic and educational practice for over a decade. This multifaceted cultural practice is a routine of processing\, designing\, farming\, gathering\, carving\, cooking\, maintenance\, manufacturing\, and teaching—all roles that require living and working with the ‘Āina\, the land\, and the community. To Aloha ‘Āina\, to love the land is Kumu Pageʻs most treasured Hawaiian value that she teaches and practices everyday. \nMade possible by the O’Brien Distinguished Professorship.

SUMMARY:Democracy from Below: Writing Women Back into Indian Politics
DESCRIPTION:Most Indian women live increasingly precarious lives as they hustle for work and to sustain families in a changing India\, and are rarely represented in official narratives. Drawing on her recent book\, The Many Lives of Syeda X\, and over a decade of reporting\, award-winning writer Neha Dixit will discuss how marginalized Indian women navigate migration\, neoliberal economic reforms\, gendered surveillance and majoritarianism\, and what it takes to tell their stories amidst shrinking media freedoms and democratic backsliding. She will also discuss how public interest journalism can bring hidden struggles back into the national conversation\, document human rights violations\, and revitalize democracy\, with implications for India and other political contexts.
