SUMMARY:Monuments Decolonized: Algeria’s French Colonial Heritage: A Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:“Statuomania” overtook Algeria beginning in the nineteenth century as the French affinity for monuments placed thousands of war memorials across its French colony (1830-1962). Following Algeria’s hard-fought independence in 1962\, colonial monuments took on different meanings. Some were “repatriated” to France\, legally or clandestinely while others were preserved in an independent Algeria. Today\, in both Algeria and France\, people are moving and removing\, vandalizing\, and preserving this contested\, yet shared monumental heritage. \nProfessor Susan Slyomovics\, UCLA \nSusan Slyomovics is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Near Eastern Languages & Cultures at UCLA. She is the author of books and articles on the topics of reparations\, anthropology of art\, and cultural and material heritage of the Middle East and North Africa. \n

SUMMARY:Marx for the Twenty-First Century
DESCRIPTION:Capital by Karl Marx is a classic of political economics and was described by Friedrich Engels\, the author’s friend and collaborator\, as “the bible of the working class.” Thirty years in the making\, this 1867 publication was the first in the three-part Das Kapital series and the only volume published during Marx’s lifetime. \nProf. Paul North (Yale University) visits Scripps College to present his recent edition of the first new English translation of Capital in fifty years (Princeton University Press\, 2024)—and the only one based on the last German edition revised by Marx himself. \nFollowing his lecture\, Prof. North will be in conversation with Scripps students Shecid Delgado\, Coral Contreras\, and La’Nae Gant (all SCR ’28).

SUMMARY:War-Making as Worldmaking: Kenya\, the United States and the War on Terror
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the entanglement of militarism\, imperialism\, and liberal-democratic governance in Kenya today\, asking what a view from East Africa can tell us about the shifting configurations and lived realities of post 9/11 imperial warfare. Informed by ethnographic research in the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa\, I will explore how Kenyan Muslim activists contend with the deaths and disappearances of their fellow citizens at the hands of U.S.-trained Kenyan police. If the Kenyan state and its security partners collect information to anticipate risk and guide decision-making\, so too must the subjects of surveillance and policing gather knowledge and make calculations about their own safety as they grapple with what it means to remake a world unmade by imperial warfare.

SUMMARY:Profit and Protest: The Business of Immigration Detention
DESCRIPTION:The United States has the largest immigration detention system globally\, growing from a capacity of under 5\,000 detainees per day in the 1980s to record highs of over 70\,000 people by 2026. Although the harshest anti-immigrant rhetoric is often linked to Republicans\, the expansion of the nation’s detention infrastructure and carceral policies has increased significantly under both political parties. Drawing on involvement with anti-detention organizations in the US\, UK\, and Australia\, Morris discusses the ways that immigration detention generates income\, even as instances of abysmal detention conditions and abuse increase. Morris considers the tensions surrounding anti-detention advocacy\, where a focus on detention reform and refugee rights complicates abolitionist action. \n  \nBio: Julia Morris is Associate Professor of International Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Visiting Politics Faculty at Scripps College. She holds a DPhil in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Oxford. Previously\, she was a Post-doctoral Fellow at The New School’s Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility and a Research Student at Oxford’s Centre on Migration\, Policy and Society. Her research focuses on the political economy of migration and border externalization\, from ethnographic fieldwork in Nauru\, Australia\, and Geneva to research projects in Jordan and Guatemala. She has published widely and is the author of Asylum and Extraction in the Republic of Nauru (2023) with Cornell University Press.
