Dr. Ian Hartshorn will give an open lecture on how trade unions came to play radically different roles in the transitional politics of Tunisia and Egypt. He will discuss how political parties and labor used each other as Islamist parties grew more powerful, and how unions worked with international institutions and forged alliances to emerge as effective political actors.
