Camp FAQ

I’ve Never Attended Camp; I Won’t Know Anyone

It can be uncomfortable attending a new adventure. Additionally, Camp has been running for over 20 years and many Scripps alumnae have attended for many years and have bonded. So it can be particularly uncomfortable walking into a room of chattering women who are obviously friends. Here’s the secret, those women are friends that you haven’t yet met. Jump in! Within a few hours you will have connections and shared stories. Further you’ll be a part of the Camp “Old Girl’s Network” unique among Women’s colleges. We want you to join us and celebrate the friendships Camp creates

What should I wear?

There are no formal occasions at Camp! Bring comfortable clothes and shoes (dining is generally across campus.) T- shirts and shorts prevail. Many events are outdoors. You might want to bring something that makes you feel fabulous for the Saturday night dinner and Grand Finale afterwards. (Dragonfly accoutrement is always admired.)

What is the weather like?

We anticipate the weather will be very hot, normally dry, but we did have the edge of a monsoon one year and temperatures vary these days. Check local listings before you pack!

Can I get a ride to/from the airport to campus?
Members of the Creative Caucus try to provide rides to/from the Ontario Airport for those new campers looking for transportation. Reach out to the alumnae office and they can put you in touch with the welcoming committee.

Where do I park to unload, and to keep my car from blowing up from the heat for 4 days?

Upon your arrival to Camp, there will be a two-step check-in process:

1. First, you will need to park your vehicle on Platt Blvd and walk to Dorsey Residence Hall. There will be a tent where staff will confirm your COVID-19 vaccination status and check your negative test result.

2. Once you’re cleared, you will be allowed to enter Dorsey Foyer and pick up your room key and conference card.

3. After you pick up your key and conference card, go back to your vehicle and unload on Platt Blvd (behind Browning Hall) or on Amherst Avenue (either behind Dorsey/Browning Halls). This is for short-term/loading and unloading parking purposes only (see Camp Parking Map.)

4. Long-term parking will be available in the Alumnae Field underground parking garage next to the Tiernan Field House. The entrance is at the south end of the Alumnae Field off North Mills Avenue (see Camp Parking Map.) The parking gate will be closed, so you will need your conference card to scan in order to enter.

Do I have to attend every workshop?

No. Remember, the motto, “Everything possible, nothing required.” You can sleep in, read trashy novels, sit under a favorite tree or do all three. Camp is a chance to rest and renew.

There’s an Art Studio? Really?

Well, kinda – we have boxes of craft supplies that have been donated over the years, and we set up tables in one of the dorm rec rooms. Workshops that are scheduled in that space have priority, of course, but at all other times the space is an open studio.

What’s with the workshop limits and sign-up sheets?

Workshops may have limited numbers for a variety of reasons – space, supplies, or something less tangible. If the presenter has requested that numbers be limited, there will be a sign-up sheet posted in the Dorsey Hall Foyer. Please look for these, and sign up for workshops you are interested in – because otherwise everything might not be possible, and that would be sad.

What’s this Grand Finale on Saturday night?

The Saturday night Grand Finale is a chance to share your creative side. After dinner, we have a procession to our very temporary art gallery and share the enjoyment of pieces created by Campers. Remember to drop your artwork at Balch Hall on Saturday afternoon! Bring your treasures made at Camp to Balch any time after lunch on Saturday. There will be tags available, so be sure to attach them to your pieces. The set up crew will then organize them into a pleasing display starting at 4:15. After dinner (7:30-8:00) we’ll enjoy the art show, and at 8 we perform! There’s a microphone for poetry, musical and spoken-word performances – please sign up on the sheet posted in the dorm lobby if you want to be part of the program. We especially encourage performances stemming from workshops you participated in at camp.

What’s the closing ceremony?

After Sunday brunch, we gather around the fountain and share final thoughts (three words that describe our experience). A basket of rosemary is passed around and each camper selects a sprig as she speaks.

What about internet access?

Scripps has total WIFI internet access, and information on using it will be in the packet when you arrive – no advance requests for access are necessary.

Camp Social Media Policy

Camp is a raucous celebration of bonding, togetherness, and silliness. In order to create an atmosphere of privacy, trust, and safety for Campers, it is requested that all participants in Camp, this includes Campers, Admin, and Staff, refrain from posting ANY images of Campers on social media without the express permission of the Camper. The one exception for posting is the Camp Scripps closed Facebook group. However, we would also ask that you not copy or save any images from the Camp Facebook page in order to share them elsewhere.

COVID-19 Protocols

Updated 6/1/22 at 5:00 pm PT

In accordance with Scripps College’s COVID-19 protocols for summer conferences, upon arrival on campus, all Campers must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and one booster shot as well as a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours prior to arrival at Camp Scripps. The COVID-19 test can be an antigen (rapid) test. Please provide the actual test or a photo of the test as proof of negative result at check-in. All Day Campers will need to be tested every day when they arrive at Camp Scripps. The Office of Alumnae Engagement will provide antigen tests for Day Campers.

Exemptions for documented medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs may be requested by emailing [email protected]. A negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of arrival at Camp is still required regardless of vaccination status.

All Campers must attest to being free of any COVID-19-related symptoms. If you are feeling ill prior to your arrival at Camp, please do not come to campus and email [email protected].

Scripps College’s campus masking requirement was removed effective March 4, 2022, except in the following campus locations:
(i) academic classes;
(ii) the Malott Commons;
(iii) the Motley Coffeehouse when ordering a drink on the café side (masking is not required in the lounge); and
(iv) the 240 House Testing Center.

If you are notified that you have been determined to be a close contact, the current LA County guidelines require that you wear a mask when around others (indoors and outdoors) for ten days after the exposure. Current Los Angeles County guidelines define “close contact” as having shared the same indoor airspace with someone with COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period while they were infectious.

Masks are strongly encouraged in all venues (indoors and outdoors) where social distancing can’t be maintained. Where masks are required, they must be of surgical quality or higher. In spaces and circumstances in which masking is not required, the decision to wear a mask is a personal decision, and such personal decisions (whether to wear or not wear a mask) should be respected.

At this time, the College is not requiring but encourages you to seriously consider, a second booster if you are eligible. At this time, the second booster has been approved by the CDC for those individuals that (i) are over the age of 50 or (ii) are immunocompromised.

Please note that this is subject to change, and all updates will be reflected here. By registering, you agree to comply with all California, Los Angeles County, and Scripps College COVID-19 safety protocols during your time on campus. For more information, please visit the Scripps Strong website.
