Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery

Founded in 1993, the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery presents four annual exhibitions spanning a wide range of art. Whether historical or contemporary, Western or Asian, exhibitions enrich the teaching of art and humanities at Scripps as well as the cultural community of Claremont and environs. The Gallery also makes the College's art collection of 8,000 objects accessible for browsing online. Gallery staff publishes exhibition catalogues and trains students in museum practice through paid internships and work-study positions. We are open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-5pm during exhibitions, closed Monday and Tuesday. For further information, please contact the Gallery's administrative offices at (909) 607-3397.

Upcoming Exhibitions

Place in Time

November 2 - December 14, 2008

The most recent demonstration of the Williamson Gallery's commitment to displaying artworks by contemporary women artists is an exhibition organized by Director Mary MacNaughton. Place in Time: Contemporary Landscapes is a collection of works in which such artists explore the unusual intersection of site and memory. The artists — Ciel Bergman (Santa Fe, NM), Nancy Friese (Cranston, RI), Karen Kitchel (Altadena, CA), Rita Robillard (Portland, OR), Sandra Mendelsohn Rubin (Los Angeles, CA), and Scripps alumnae Laurie Brown (Newport Beach, CA; SC '59), Monica Furmanski (Ventura, CA; SC '96), and Idelle Weber (New York, NY; SC '54) — offer their disparate interpretations of landscape imagery through their respective aesthetics. Using various media, ranging from oil on canvas, linen, and panel, to digital photography printed on lightjet, eight women depict the momentary coincidence of place and time, provoking inquiry and reflection in the contemporary viewer.

A panel discussion with participating artists, supported by the Clark Fund and the Scripps Department of Gender and Women's Studies, will be held at the gallery on Sunday, November 2 at 4:00 pm. An opening reception will begin at 5 pm.

Ceramic Annual 2009: 65th Scripps Ceramic Annual

January 24 - April 5, 2009

Assistant Professor of Ceramics Adam Davis steps in as guest curator of the college's 65th Ceramic Annual. Davis received his MFA from the University of Arizona in 1999 and since then has worked in residency at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, and, most recently, Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in Trondheim, Sweden. He has exhibited widely around the US in the last decade.

Professor Davis has selected works by Tori Arpad, Christy Gast, Jeff Irwin, Charles Krafft, Io Palmer, Katherine L. Ross, Anders Ruhwald, and Reinaldo Sanguino to celebrate Scripps' ceramics tradition. He plans to include works in the show, which he has tentatively titled "Wearing It On Your Sleeve: Sympathizers, Empathizers, Provocateurs," that "provoke and challenge their viewers to focus in on marginalization."

The exhibition and catalog, with an essay written by Farid Azfar, are made possible by a grant from the Pasadena Art Alliance and additional financial support from Francine and William Baker, Gloria and Sonny Kamm, Barbara and Victor Klein, Susan and Brent Maire, Diane and Igal Silber, and Skutt Ceramic Products, Inc.

On January 24 at 4:00 pm, Professor Davis will speak about the exhibition in the Scripps Humanities Auditorium. An opening reception at the gallery will follow, starting at 7:00 pm.

All upcoming exhibitions may be viewed here.
