Mutatis Mutandis

– Out of Print –

The theme of this book is change, with a subtext about dream vs. reality and was written by the students who printed the “Simple Form” broadside above. The phrase mutatis mutandis means “the necessary changes having been made.” The subtext is represented by the phrase “a change came o’er the spirit of my dream.” The students had to work with inherent structural changes in the format of the book with a pop-up in the centerfold of each section. The stream of consciousness subtext is printed on the pop-outs and includes the words “and then she woke up” several times. The book was printed letterpress on Somerset Book paper. Centaur and Arrighi are the front and back matter typefaces. Images were printed on an HP Laserjet 4M Plus printer. The size is 7.5″ square, and the book is bound in acrylic painted and sanded sheets with an acrylic slipcase. The edition is 50 copies. This book won first place in an international book arts exhibition! The exhibition, Turning the Page, was at the Academy Art Center Gallery in Honolulu, Hawaii and ran from October 6 – 30, 1996. It was sponsored by the Honolulu Printmakers Guild and was juried by Hedi Kyle, a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a book conservator. Out of 256 entries, 130 were chosen for the exhibit. Mutatis Mutandis won best of show and a monetary prize and was chosen to represent the exhibition on its brochure.
