Clockwork

Everything ran like clockwork. The pressure was on, the presses ran hot and time was running out. But we printed sixty copies of this Scripps College Press book in the nick of time on 112 pages of Nideggen and black Bugra papers. This time, for the front and back matter, we used 12 pt. Fournier and 30 pt. Weiss Initials. We didn’t have enough type for everyone to work with the same typeface, so we used seven different faces. Because of time constraints, with 13 students on three Vandercook presses, we decided to print four-up. The imagery was cut four-up on one large linoleum block as well, causing considerable consternation in planning the carving. Some blocks had acrylic gel medium added for texture. The binding, based on Gary Frost’s sewn boards style, was selected because we had to trim the edges of the paper anyway, and because it is so sharp-looking and geometric. We took time to sew tightly over ramie tapes. The boards were covered in Japanese bookcloth with an airplane linen spine. The size is 5″ wide by 8.5″ tall. Time will tell if this book is a reflection of its era.
