A Letter of Welcome from the President

Lori Bettison-VargaBefore the founding of Scripps College, women’s rights activist Susan Brownwell Anthony said “Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never bring about reform. Those who are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the world’s estimation.”

Scripps students choose an intense, academically demanding experience; by doing so, they set a course of their own making and launch a lifetime of choices they are prepared to make, unencumbered by fear or false boundaries.

In their time here, we challenge our students within an intentional environment – one designed to provide the rigor needed to develop intellectually and personally, and to do so with the support of remarkable and committed faculty, staff, and peers.

We expect risk-taking, whether it’s through an opportunity for undergraduate research, the leadership of a club or organization, the internship across the country, or the robust academic program on the other side of the world. The Scripps experience shapes confident, courageous leaders in life after college.

I am honored to lead an institution that finds passion in knowledge and action and that serves a mission more relevant today than ever.

The mission of Scripps College calls on us to “educate women to develop their intellects and talents through active participation in a community of scholars so that as graduates they may contribute to society through public and private lives of leadership, service, integrity, and creativity.”

I invite you to explore our website and to learn more about the Scripps community.
