Supporting our Students
The academic environment of the W.M. Keck Science Department, although rigorous and challenging, is overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Post-Bac students enjoy personalized guidance from both faculty and staff to select courses and assess their performance and progress. Group tutoring on evenings or weekends is a popular feature of the program, and Post-Bac and undergraduate students often work together in small study groups. Math review sessions are offered every fall and students may also use the resources at the Math Spot tutoring center throughout the academic year.
Staff and faculty assist students in researching volunteer opportunities, consult with them on their letters of recommendation, and provide advising for medical school applications and career preparation. Valuable time is spent sharing information about application procedures and the medical school application process. We also sponsor talks by medical professionals and recent graduates of the Post-Bac Program who can advise students preparing for interviews and the application process. Upon completion of the program, students benefit tremendously from a detailed committee letter of recommendation written by our faculty advisor. If students do not link with a medical school, our staff continues to advise and support them with the application process after graduation.
“The Scripps Post-Bac Program was attractive to me because of its condensed nature and the support provided by the program director, DeEttra Mulay. I was an older applicant coming into the program, and it was important that I move on to the next step sooner rather than later. It was very encouraging to have an advocate like DeEttra in my corner.”
