Post-Communist European Union States Struggle for Autonomy in Global World

Dr. Hilary Appel, professor of government at Claremont McKenna College, will give a talk titled, “Is Domestic Politics Dead? Fiscal Reform and the New EU States” on Thursday, October 28, at 12:15 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Elizabeth Hubert Malott Commons on the Scripps College campus. The lecture, part of the European Union Center of California’s “Small States – Global Influence” speaker series, is free and open to the public.

The author of several published articles on the political and economic transformation in Eastern Europe and Russia , Dr. Appel recently completed a book on the topic, A New Capitalist Order: Privatization and Ideology in Russia and Eastern Europe. Her talk will focus on post-communist Europe as an example of the waning of domestic political influences and the declining economic policy autonomy of states, and in this case, newly autonomous states, resulting from the imperatives of European and global integration.

Dr. Appel earned a doctoral degree in political science from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in Russian and East European Area Studies from Stanford University, and a bachelor’s degree in political science and the Russian language from Williams College.

The European Union Center of California, housed on the Scripps College campus, sponsors Hilary Appel’s appearance. Part of a network of EU Centers nationwide, the EU Center of California seeks to promote education, scholarly research, and public understanding of European integration and its consequences.
