Student Leadership Institute

The Laspa Center for Leadership will host the annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI) this summer, August 19-21, 2020. Program content combines training and leadership development in a series of sessions tailored to engage student leaders in building community and enhancing  the student experience at Scripps. The Institute is designed with two primary goals in mind:

  1. Create a common leadership experience for student leaders.
  2. Provide opportunities for collaboration among student leaders. to connect with each other. 


SLI 2019 was designed with a focus on self-awareness as a leader, bringing leadership into action, and the role of leaders in building community. Sessions included a leadership self-assessment, Leading with Empathy, and Cultural Communication. Other topics included included goal setting, project management, creating effective programs, facilitating meetings and events, and transition reports. Students also heard from past student leaders about their own lessons learned and networked with LA-Based NPO leaders.


All currently enrolled Scripps College student leaders are welcome to participate. Space is limited with priority registration reserved for Student Affairs student staff, Clorg leadership, and others who attendance at SLI is part of their fall training requirements.

Now Accepting Conference Proposals!

The Laspa Center welcomes conference proposals that create a common leadership experience for student leadership and provide opportunities for collaboration. Successful proposals will offer participants a chance to actively apply what they are learning and address at least one of the Center’s leadership competencies: Mindfulness, Strategic Thinking, Social Skills, Empathy, Organizational Dynamics, and Effective Management. Dates and Deadlines

May 1, 2020: Deadline to submit
May 8, 2020: Notifications of acceptance

May 29, 2020: Draft supplemental materials and room set-up due
July 1, 2020: Final program abstract and materials due

August 19-21, 2020: Conference

Sessions typically run 45 to 90 minutes and will take place between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Presenters should plan to be available at the time their session is assigned in the conference program. Student presenters are expected to attend SLI; staff and faculty are invited to observe any SLI sessions.

Upon submission of a proposal, the primary session contact should receive an automatic email confirmation.

*Although the dates for Student Leadership Institute are firm, we’ll consider flexibility in our presenters proposals and accommodate schedules that have been impacted by COVID-19.
