Leadership Immersion Treks

Leveraging the Laspa Center’s strategic partnerships, students have access to exploratory and educational conferences and symposiums through Leadership Immersion Treks. PLEN Women and Congress

March 17-22 (Spring Break)

Learn about the legislative process, explore the legislative process and hot button issues on Capitol Hill, and build a professional network of women in this expenses-paid Leadership Immersion Trek to Washington, DC. Participating students will have an opportunity to learn from and network with women from all sectors of Congress who are leading policy; meet with alumnae; explore metropolitan D.C.; and develop hands-on skills in public speaking, networking, advocacy, salary negotiation, resume building, running for office, and more.

The Laspa Center will send 6-10 students to participate in the PLEN Women and Congress. Sponsorship includes airfare, registration, lodging, and some meals. All currently enrolled Scripps College students in good academic standing are eligible to apply. This conference will require personal accountability and responsibility. Review a sample itinerary.

Eligibility

All currently enrolled students who have completed at least one full semester are eligible to apply. Students are limited to one trek experience per year (including treks hosted by CP&R).

Application Requirements

The application includes a series of short-answer questions and a current resume (upload).

Supplemental Materials

Leadership Immersion Trek participants may be asked to share their experiences with the community and will be asked to submit:

  • a post-program survey
  • one-paged trek summary with photo
  • one blog submission

Timeline

  • Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.  (Each applicant should receive an automatic confirmation upon submission.)
  • All applicants will be notified of the status of their application by Monday, February 11.
  • Students who receive sponsorship will need to register with PLEN by February 14.

Carter Center Executive Briefing Sponsorship

March 14-15

Through the generosity of former trustee Barbara Bruner ’76, one student will attend the Carter Center’s Executive Briefing Conference and activities in and around Atlanta from March 14-15 with an optional add-on trip to Plains, GA (Carter’s hometown) through March 17. This award covers all conference related expenses including airfare, hotel, registration and meals.

Eligibility

All currently-enrolled Scripps College sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing are eligible to apply.

To Apply

  1. Send an email to to laspa@scrippscollege.edu. Include your last name and “Bruner Carter Center Application” (e.g. Smith_Bruner Carter Center Application).
  2. Attach a Resume that includes your name in the file name.
  3. Attach a Statement of Intent (approximately 500 words that address your interest in attending the conference, previous experience, if any, with health, human rights, and/or peace). Include your name, class year, email, phone number, major/minor, and Scripps mail box number.

All applications must be received by 11:59pm on Sunday, February 10 2019.

Forté Foundation Business Leadership Conference

Friday, April 12 – Boston, MA

The Forté Foundation is a non-profit consortium of leading companies and top business schools working together to launch women into fulfilling, significant careers through access to business education, opportunities, and a community of successful women. Explore a multitude of business careers, build leadership skills, and expand your network in this one-day interactive conference on the east coast designed to introduce liberal arts and STEM majors to women business leaders from top companies.

The Laspa Center will send 4 students to participate in the Business Leadership Conference on April 12. Sponsorship includes airfare, registration, lodging, and some meals. Learn more here.

Currently enrolled Scripps College first years, sophomores, and juniors in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Students are limited to one trek experience per year (including treks hosted by CP&R).

Application Requirements

The application includes a 300-word statement of interest, a current resume, and a copy of your current transcript. This trek will require missing a Thursday and Friday class; all applicants are responsible for contacting their professors in advance.

Participants may be asked to share their experiences with the community and will be asked to submit:

  • a post-program survey
  • one-paged trek summary with photo
  • one blog submission

Timeline

  • Applications are due by 11:59pm on Sunday, February 17, 2019. Each applicant should receive an automatic confirmation upon submission.
  • All applicants will be notified of the status of their application within 1-2 business days.
  • Students who receive sponsorship will need to confirm their participation by February 22.
