In the mid-1990s Joan assumed management of a family real estate investment company, a position she currently holds. Joan has also served on many nonprofit boards including the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation, Valley Community Healthcare, Sinai Akiba Academy, and the Milken Community Schools. Among her great accomplishments, Joan is proud of raising a kind and generous 22-year-old daughter.
Favorite gift to Scripps:
Her gift to support the construction of Scripps’ new residence hall and scholarships. “Living on campus is one of the best and richest parts of the Scripps experience and scholarships are a direct way to open the Scripps experience to any worthy young woman regardless of financial ability.”
About her passion for philanthropy:
“I was raised in a Jewish family that lived the Jewish Value of Tzedakah, a Hebrew word that means justice or fairness, but also connotes an obligation to perform good acts. My parents strongly believed that it was our personal obligation to give both time and funds back to the community. It is a value that I was raised with and a value that I have tried to pass on to my daughter.”
What inspires you to give to Scripps:
“Education is one of the most valuable gifts that we can give to all of our children. I received an outstanding education at Scripps. A foundation in the liberal arts makes people more humane and benefits all students—even those interested in pursuing the sciences, politics or business. I believe in the value of a college which offers women a safe, stable environment to grow and develop personally and intellectually. These are values that Scripps embodies and these values deserve my continuing support.”
In addition to Scripps, Joan also supports The Stephen S. Wise Temple, KCRW, LACMA, Valley Community Healthcare, and Bet Tzedek legal services.
