Here’s How You Can Help Scripps During COVID-19

By Emily Glory Peters

Fred Rogers once recalled his mother’s advice to “look for the helpers” in periods of tragedy and crisis. These helpers make up a class to which the Scripps community belongs, and we are increasingly thankful for your support as we maneuver the ever-evolving impact of COVID-19 on our students, faculty, and staff.

In response to the many who have offered aid in this time, we’ve pulled together all the ways you can help Scripps continue to thrive.

Make a gift to critical funding areas

The pandemic has caused significant financial losses for the College and profoundly impacted many of our students who are confronting unexpected changes to their educational experience. To help us protect the welfare of our community and safeguard the future of Scripps, please consider making a gift to the following areas:

  • The COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund: Help cover unanticipated expenses and sustain Scripps during the pandemic.
  • The Student Emergency Fund: Help defray student costs for travel, storage, and distance-learning technology.
  • Scholarships: Ensure that students whose financial situation may have been impacted by COVID-19 can continue to attend Scripps.
  • The Scripps Fund: Support essential College operations and academic programs for our students and faculty.

Check if your employer will match your gift
Businesses and organizations are seeking ways to help those impacted by the outcomes of COVID-19 and many will match charitable contributions of their employees and/or their spouses.

To maximize the impact of your donation, check your employer’s human resources department to see if they’ll match your gift. If they will, please contact Advancement Services at (909) 607-7284 and we‘ll gladly guide you through the process.

Add your information to the COVID-19 Student Support Form
Submit this form, created by Recent Graduate Trustee Sneha Deo ’17, to offer academic and career resources, material support such as housing and airline miles, or community-building opportunities directly to students and families affected by COVID-19.

Support Scripps Associated Students (SAS) and Clubs and Organizations (CLORGs)
To aid their peers, Scripps Associated Students established the SAS COVID-19 Student Relief Fund to cover students’ minor short-term expenses incurred as a result of the pandemic.

Your gift to this fund will help cover groceries, toiletries, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and other necessities. Contact SAS treasurers Grace Zhirui Shao ’21 and Safia Hassan ’21 for more information: [email protected].

Write a letter of encouragement to incoming students of the Class of 2024
Given the challenges related to COVID-19 and the uncertainties of the upcoming academic year, we want to ensure our new students still experience the power of the Scripps community. Please sign up here to share words of courage, confidence, and hope with new first year and transfer students as they begin their time at Scripps!

Hire Scripps graduates
Many students are concerned about how their career prospects may be altered due to the pandemic. Extend a helping hand by promoting Scripps’ 2020 Resume Book, a valuable resource filled with nearly 100 accomplished Scripps seniors and recent graduates. Be sure to share the book with your networks to give these deserving students a head start.

Since our founding nearly 100 years ago, the Scripps College community has become known not only for its unshakeable commitment to academic excellence, but also for its commitment to the wellbeing of others. Thank you for being the “helpers” our world so greatly needs.
