Public Talk by William Deresiewicz: “What is College For?”

William Deresiewicz, the author of Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life and 2015 Mary Routt Chair of Writing at Scripps, shares his observations about education at the Claremont Colleges and elsewhere. What is the meaning of words like “leadership” and “service”? How has education—even here—been reshaped by neoliberal ideas of value? What are the liberal arts, and what are they supposed to do for you? What does it mean to learn how to think? What are you supposed to think about, and why?

This event is co-sponsored by the Scripps College Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities and the Mary Routt Chair of Writing.
