Gabriela Santizo

The 1990s mark a period of economic crisis in Cuba that altered the lives of Cubans, restructured the cityscape of Havana, and was characterized by an uncertainty regarding the future of the Cuban Revolution. Yet, amid that crisis, the 1990s saw a peak in the literary production of women writers who in their texts found a vehicle through which to document and contextualize historically their experiences of the crisis. In this talk, Professor Santizo examines the ways in which Cuban women writing within the island remember and reconstruct Havana by mapping the affective dimensions of the crisis into urban space as well as the divergent places of women in the city. This talk thus seeks to highlight the significance of the contributions made by Cuban women writers to the social production of Havana.
