Celtic Spring

Celtic SpringThis free event is part of the Levitt on the Lawn concert series presented by Pasadena’s Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts and sponsored by alumna Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch ’74. Since 2005, Levitt on the Lawn has brought seventeen diverse musical performances to the Scripps College campus. The eighteenth event will feature the group Celtic Spring, a family of Irish fiddlers and step dancers whose energetic and soulful performances have entertained live and television audiences around the world.

Celtic Spring’s music hails from Ireland, Scotland, and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. While immersed in traditional music, the band has developed a unique style and a repertoire that includes numerous original compositions. A depth of expression is evident in their stunning arrangements — from haunting airs to hard-driving dance tunes.

The six Wood family siblings have spent their lives on stage, each learning the fiddle and Irish step dancing at the age of four years old. They are also classically trained violinists, an influence which has brought even more beauty and clarity to their music. A defining element of Celtic Spring is the dual expertise in music and dance. The Wood siblings are champion Irish dancers, influenced by French Canadian and Cape Breton step dancing styles. The tight choreography, powerful footwork, intricacy and precision of the dancing astound audiences.

The concert begins at 5:30 pm on the Bowling Green at Scripps College. Dinner will be available for purchase on the lawn (students free with meal card, all others pay $9.00), though picnic dinners are also welcomed. For more information, call the Malott Commons Program Office at (909) 607-9372.
