Milhaud, Suite, Op. 157b and Khachaturian, Trio (1932)

Alfred Cramer (Pomona), violin

Albert Rice, clarinet;

Gayle Blankenburg (Pomona/Scripps), piano

Music for clarinet, violin, and piano from the early twentieth century.

Composed in Paris, Milhaud’s playful Suite is a theatrical blend of old- and new-world elements. Khachaturian’s Trio, composed in Moscow, is inspired by Eastern European folk-music. In this program they are separated by Ives’s transcendentally meditative Largo, composed in Connecticut.
