Roxanne Wilson Leader-in-Residence: Emily Ramshaw
Electability. Likability. These words, used to describe Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, were oft repeated as the 2016 presidential election unfolded. For Emily Ramshaw, a journalist and new mother, these words invoked ire. Why did media coverage focus on this during such a historic race? It took another presidential campaign cycle—one with more female candidates vying for the nomination than ever before—for Ramshaw to do something concrete about her frustration. The 19th*, a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom reporting at the intersection of gender, politics, and policy, was born. Cofounded with Amanda Zamora, the organization aims to empower women—particularly those underserved by and underrepresented in American media—with the information, community, and tools they need to be equal participants in our democracy. Ramshaw, in conversation with The 19th*’s editor-at-large Errin Haines, will share more about the organization’s development and reflect on why representation matters.
The Roxanne Wilson Leader-in-Residence program brings to Scripps’ campus a woman who demonstrates leadership in both her professional life and volunteer service to her community and beyond. The endowment was established to recognize the significant contributions of Roxanne Wilson ’76 upon her retirement as chair of the Scripps College Board of Trustees. This program is also presented in partnership with Scripps’ Laspa Center for Leadership.
