“Human Forms, in Clay, Wood and Bronze”

This exhibition displays over 40 three dimensional representations of the human figure, from realistic renderings to abstract forms. Ceramic works by Anne Scott Plummer, Susi Singer, Henry Takemoto and Peter Voulkos explore ways that movement and stillness can be depicted. Monumental wood sculptures from Sierra Leone, Buddhist gilt bronze figures from China and Nepal, lacquered wood statues from Japan and Thailand, and a clay Central American figurine indicate how deities were depicted and the dead were commemorated. These selections are from the Scripps College Collections, and the exhibition is in conjunction with Art 125 “Figurative Ceramic Sculpture,” Art History 150 “Arts of China” and Core III “Bodies in Motion.”
