In this lecture, Helen Hester will consider the role of ‘the human’ within contemporary posthuman feminisms. Starting with a brief appraisal of xenofeminism, the talk will proceed to address some of the tensions within the XF project – namely, that between its perceived posthuman ambitions and its reliance upon broadly humanist concepts such as reason, justice, and emancipation. By bringing 2015’s ‘Xenofeminism: A Politics for Alienation’ into conversation with other recent feminist manifestos, Hester will propose a new understanding of the posthuman that draws upon both human and humanist attributes in its quest to imagine a more emancipatory future for the species. Xenofeminist posthumanism, she argues, might be most effectively realized via the formulation “sapience + care”.
