Overnight Stay FAQ

What does an overnight stay include?

An overnight stay is a great way to see Scripps’ social and residential life firsthand. Overnight guests hang out with their host, eat dinner and breakfast in the Malott dining hall with their host, and sleep in their host’s residence hall room.

When are overnights offered?

Overnight visits are offered Monday to Thursday evenings. Guests meet their host at 4:30 p.m. in the Office of Admission and the overnight visit wraps up with breakfast the following day at 8:30 a.m.

Can I request a different day of the week?

No, Monday to Thursday nights are the only days of the week we are able to offer hosted overnight stays.

Can I request a later arrival time?

Host matching must take place by 5:00 p.m., which is when the Office of Admission closes for the day. We cannot make guarantees, but will do our best to accommodate planned after-hours host matching or unexpected delays (flights, traffic). Please call us at 909-621-8149 as soon as possible to discuss late arrival options.

Are there eligibility exceptions?

No, we are only able to host high school seniors and transfer students. However, any student is free to arrange a private overnight stay with a Scripps student.

What should I bring with me?

Overnight guests will most likely sleep on the floor of their host’s room. Bring a towel, pillow and a sleeping bag (or you may borrow a sleeping bag from us). We provide meal passes for the Malott dining hall for dinner and breakfast with your host, as well as lunch on your own, should you be spending the day before/after your overnight on campus. We also provide space in the Office of Admission to store your belongings between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Does my overnight reservation include a campus tour, an information session, an interview and/or a class visit?

No, your overnight stay only includes the time with your student host from 4:30 p.m. through breakfast the next morning. You must register for all other activities as part of a Campus Visit. These can be scheduled for the hours before 4:00 p.m. on the date of your overnight stay and/or for the day after. Splitting on-campus events between two dates will require separate Campus Visit reservations for each date. Interviews and class visits require reservations prior to coming to campus.

Will I visit classes with my host?

No, if you want to visit classes during your Scripps visit you must sign up online as noted above.

I’m traveling alone, how will I get to campus?

You will need to arrange your own ground transportation to and from campus. Students will often utilize taxis, Lyft, and/or Super Shuttles when considering ground transportation options. The street address for Scripps College is: 1030 Columbia Avenue, Claremont, CA 91711, which will drop you directly in front of the Admission Office, located in Balch Hall, Room 100. If you are driving yourself, please request a parking pass at the front desk of the Office of Admission when you check in. Your student host will later swipe you and your car into our parking garage as overnight street parking is not allowed.
