Research & Internships
Contribute to the creation of knowledge. Test drive a career. Realize your call to action. An important part of the education here at Scripps involves taking what you discuss in class and putting it into practice.
In various departments across campus, Scripps students participate in independent research projects, as well as research under the mentorship of our faculty. One primary advantage of having only undergraduate students is that the focus is on you. Students can begin participating in research as early as their first year at Scripps. At the W. M. Keck Science Center, Scripps, Pitzer, and Claremont McKenna College students participate in academic year and summer research, often co-authoring papers and presenting their research at academic conferences. Located on the Scripps campus, the European Union Center of California also offers a number of student research and internship opportunities and sponsors an annual undergraduate research conference each spring.
All Scripps students are required to complete a senior thesis as part of their degree program. This capstone project is “a culminating opportunity for each student to show she has developed the skills and abilities to make a significant, meaningful contribution to the body of knowledge in her chosen major.” The senior thesis may take the form of a paper, study, policy report, recital, installation, or lab project. Scripps College hosts an event called Capstone Day each spring, in which graduating seniors are selected to showcase their capstone work through formal talks, poster sessions, exhibitions, or performances.
A large majority of Scripps students complete one or more internships during their undergraduate career. Internships allow students to explore a career field of interest, gain career-related work experience and skills, and integrate classroom learning with the working world. Scripps students might secure positions here on campus and in the local community, academic-year internships in Los Angeles, or summer positions around the country and world. Our Career Planning & Resources Office coordinates a number of Scripps Internships and Grants available to students. Opportunities include the Gabrielle Giffords ’93 Internship in Public Service, the Davis Family Foundation Leadership Internship Grant, and the Getty Grant Multicultural Summer Internship.
